Pet Supplements, Compared by Ingredient

The same active ingredient can sit inside very different tubs at very different prices. We line them up by what's actually in them — joint, skin & coat, digestion, calm, immunity and senior support for dogs and cats — so you can see the value, not just the label.

Why compare supplements by ingredient, not by brand

Pet supplements are one of the fastest-growing corners of UK pet care — the nutraceuticals market is worth hundreds of millions of pounds and is growing at roughly 10% a year. That growth has a side effect: dozens of tubs that look different, are priced very differently, and yet often lean on the same handful of active ingredients. Glucosamine, chondroitin, green-lipped mussel, omega-3 (EPA and DHA), probiotics and L-tryptophan turn up again and again under different names.

Maggie Search treats supplements the same way it treats medicines: we group them by their active ingredient so you can compare like with like. A joint chew and a joint powder that both rely on glucosamine and green-lipped mussel are, nutritionally, closer than their packaging suggests — and the price per day can differ enormously. Our job is to make that visible. We are not a shop and we do not ship anything: when you pick a product, you go straight to a registered UK pharmacy, and they handle payment, delivery and returns.

A supplement is a complementary feed, not a medicine. It is intended to support normal health and nutrition, not to treat, cure or prevent disease. If your pet has a diagnosed condition or is already on medication, a supplement is not a replacement — talk to your vet first, because some ingredients interact with medicines or aren't right for very young, pregnant or unwell animals.

🦴 Joint & Mobility

Key ingredients: glucosamine · chondroitin · green-lipped mussel · turmeric · omega-3

The biggest supplement category, and the one where value varies most. Older dogs and large breeds are the main buyers, and because joint support is usually given daily for life, the price per day matters far more than the price on the tub. Compare by the active ingredients and the dose, not the brand on the front.

Turmeric · daily Johnson's

4Joints Turmeric Granules 250g

A turmeric-based granule traditionally given alongside a normal diet to support the joints of active and older pets.

✨ Skin & Coat

Key ingredients: omega-3 (EPA/DHA) · fish & cod liver oil · biotin

Omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil are the workhorse of coat and skin support. A dull coat or dry skin has many causes, so this is support, not treatment — but a good omega-3 source is one of the most widely used and best-value complementary feeds for dogs and cats.

Omega-3 · value Johnson's

Cod Liver Oil Capsules 170 Caps

A traditional source of omega-3 and vitamins A and D, given as a complementary feed to support skin and coat condition.

Bulk · best per-cap Johnson's

Cod Liver Oil Capsules 800 Caps

The same omega-3 source in a larger pack — usually the lowest cost per capsule for multi-pet or long-term use.

🫃 Digestive

Key ingredients: probiotics · prebiotics · kaolin · fibre

Digestive supports range from everyday probiotic pastes to hairball remedies for cats. They're a complementary feed for settled, everyday tummy support — not a treatment for a pet that is persistently unwell, which always needs a vet.

Everyday gut support Beaphar

IntestoPro Paste for Cats & Dogs 20ml

A palatable paste with prebiotics and electrolytes, given as a complementary feed to support normal digestive balance.

Cats · hairball Beaphar

2 in 1 Hairball Paste 100g

A malt-based paste to help cats pass ingested hair naturally as part of a normal grooming routine.

😌 Calming

Key ingredients: alpha-casozepine · L-tryptophan · L-theanine

Calming supplements are complementary feeds used to support relaxed behaviour around predictable stress — fireworks, travel, a house move. They sit alongside training and environment, and they aren't a substitute for veterinary behavioural advice for a genuinely anxious pet.

Alpha-casozepine Zylkene

Calming Capsules for Dogs 30-60kg

A milk-protein (alpha-casozepine) supplement widely used to support dogs coping with change and short-term stress.

L-theanine Anxitane

Anxitane Chewable Tablets (Small) 30 Tablets

L-theanine chews for smaller dogs and cats, used to support calm behaviour during predictable stressful events.

Pheromone diffuser Beaphar

CaniComfort Calming Diffuser 48ml

A dog-appeasing pheromone diffuser for the home, often used around fireworks season and settling periods.

🛡️ Immunity & Vitality

Key ingredients: omega-3 · vitamins A & D · antioxidants

General wellbeing supplements support a normal, balanced diet rather than targeting any one system. Omega-3 sources and multivitamin-style feeds are the mainstays — useful for fussy eaters, working dogs and pets on a home-prepared diet.

Everyday vitality Johnson's

Cod Liver Oil Capsules 40 Caps

A small-pack omega-3, vitamin A and D source to support general condition and vitality as part of a balanced diet.

👵 Senior

Key ingredients: joint support · omega-3 · antioxidants

Older dogs and cats often benefit from nutritional support across several fronts at once — joints, coat and general condition. Senior support is usually a combination of the categories above rather than a single product, and because it's given long-term, the daily cost is what to watch.

Senior joints Johnson's

4Joints Turmeric Granules 250g

Turmeric granules to support the joints of older, less mobile pets alongside their normal diet.

Senior coat Johnson's

Cod Liver Oil Capsules 170 Caps

An omega-3 source to support skin and coat condition in ageing dogs and cats.

Paying for a prescription medicine too?

If your pet is on a lifelong medicine — for arthritis, heart disease, thyroid or kidney conditions — a supplement is only part of the picture. You have a legal right to a written prescription and can buy the medicine from any VMD-registered pharmacy you choose, often for far less than the practice price.

Supplement FAQs

Do pet supplements need a prescription in the UK?

No. These are complementary feed, not veterinary medicines, so they don't need a prescription. They are not a substitute for a medicine your vet has prescribed — if your pet is unwell or on medication, speak to your vet before adding a supplement.

How does Maggie Search make money from supplements?

Some links to pharmacies earn us a commission through affiliate networks including Awin. It never changes what we show you, it never costs you more, and the price you pay is the pharmacy's price. The tool is free to pet owners.

Are these supplements safe for my dog or cat?

Complementary feeds sold in the UK are generally well tolerated, but suitability depends on your pet's weight, age and any medication it takes. Read the label, follow the feeding guide, and check with your vet before starting a new supplement — especially for pregnant, very young or unwell animals.

What's the difference between a supplement and a medicine?

A veterinary medicine is authorised by the VMD to treat or prevent a specific condition and often needs a prescription. A supplement is a complementary feed intended to support normal health and nutrition, with no medicinal claims. We compare both but keep them clearly separated.

Who handles delivery and returns?

Maggie Search doesn't sell or ship anything. When you choose a product you're taken to a registered UK pharmacy such as VioVet, and delivery, payment and returns are handled entirely by that retailer under their own terms.

Maggie Search is an independent price-comparison service operated by KG Global Commerce Ltd (Companies House 17266029). The products listed here are complementary feeds, not veterinary medicines, and nothing on this page is veterinary advice or a therapeutic claim. Product images and availability are provided by the retailer and prices are shown on the retailer's own site. Some links are affiliate links (including via Awin); this never affects ranking or the price you pay. Always read the product label and consult your vet before introducing a new supplement.
